is there an actual difference, and reason as to why it’s different? or is it just a random executive decision when they make the final product?
how come the mercedes benz emblem sometimes sticks up off the car, and other times it's stuck to the car?

The lines are getting a little more blurred but the original concept was that coupes, roadsters, and trucks all had the star in the grille while 4-door sedans had the ornament on top of the hood. Now, with the introduction of the new C-Class 4 door sedan, customers can choose either an Elegance or a Sport package. If you order an Elegance, you get the ornament on top of the hood but if you order the Sport, the star comes in the centre of the grille. Like I said, the concept is not as concise as it once was.
If you know a Benz buff and you really want to impress him/her, ask that person which model production Benz was the first to have the Mercedes star in the centre of the grill.
The answer: The 1955 300SL ( with the gullwing doors )
